Mariah Carey is a world-famous singer with a net worth of $510 million. With more than half a billion dollars to her name, she is one of the most successful singers of her generation, and the world recognizes her voice every time she comes on the radio. With pop hits, ballads and even holiday music to her name, she is someone who can sing just about anything, and she most certainly has one of the most recognizable and most beautiful voices in the world. The 45-year-old actress, singer and songwriter has been living the dream for decades. She is going through a tumultuous divorce from her much younger husband, Nick Cannon, at the moment, but she does have her young twins to keep her mind off of that.
Born in New York, she was the daughter of an aeronautical engineer and a singer and vocal coach. Her family did not spend much time at all with her maternal grandparents because Mariah Carey’s maternal grandparents denounced their daughter after she eloped with Carey’s father (because he was black and her family did not approve). She felt that her family suffered greatly for this, and her parent’s marriage only lasted until she was three. She’s said that their community was not open-minded at all about their interracial marriage at this particular time in the world, and it was not something that her parents were able to work through.
She did not see much of her father after that, but she did begin sneaking a radio into her bedroom when she was only four because Mariah Carey already loved to sing. It’s something she did her entire life. She was very good with music, but she was not good with people. She found them difficult to relate to, so she focused on her music and her studies so that she would find interest somewhere in her life. When she was in high school, she began writing music and working with a singer by the name of Brenda K. Starr, who recognized that Carey had a beautiful voice and real talent. She worked very hard to get her to become famous, and it worked. It was the end of 1988 when Starr gave record producer Tommy Mottola a tape of Mariah Carey singing as he left a party. He listened in the car and loved it so much he turned around to go meet Carey, who actually already left the party.
Mottola spent two weeks tracking her down before he found her, and he began working tirelessly to make her the most competitive singer in the business. He wanted to put her up against singers already famous, such as Madonna and Whitney Houston, and he did. Her first album, named after her, was released in 1991 and became the best selling album in the country that year. Her star only rose from there. She married Tommy Mottola two years later, and the couple remained married for four years. She has some of the most amazing songs in the world to her name, and she’s won countless awards, starred in movies and been endorsed by some of the biggest names in the industry, and that’s why she’s worth a half billion dollars.
