Nelly is a rapper and actor with a net worth of $60 million. He began his career when he was only 19-years-old in 1993. He was part of a group called “The Lunatics,” who performed their rap music for others, and he did a good job with them. However, he quickly realized he had more going for him than some of the other members of the group, and he made the decision to go out on his own. He did just that, making his career a solo one less than two years later. It would still take him another five years after that to hit big fame with one of his most famous singles to date, “Country Grammar,” and he would only become more famous after that.
Nelly was born in 1974 in Texas. This often comes as a surprise to many since the rapper often discusses being a St. Louis native. His parents divorced when he was seven, and that’s when he moved to St. Louis. His father was active military when he was born, so he was no stranger to moving around as a child. However, it was St. Louis that he called his home and made his base. He lived there until he signed his first recording contract with Universal Records. It was 1996 at the time. He did not release his first album until 2000. That’s when the hit “Country Grammar” was released and he hit it big time. It seemed to those of us who listened to his music that he became famous overnight; and suddenly it was all Nelly all the time in our ears. It was immediately on the Top 10 list, and it stayed there for a long time. It was the first time that Nelly would experience a Top 10 Hit, but certainly not the last. The song was such a hit that Nelly became a household name overnight, and he was everywhere after that.
Strangely, though, he did not win his first Grammy until 2003 and his last in 2004. In 2005, he showed the world that he was more than just a rap star when he starred opposite Chris Rock and Adam Sandler in “The Longest Yard,” which was an instant hit and a box office phenomenon. For the next decade, he was able to release a grand total of 7 albums, countless number ones and he has sold more than 20 million records to date.
Much of Nelly’s net worth comes from his music career, but he has also earned a significant amount from his movies and from his many collaborations and endorsements. He’s endorsed Nike, Reebok, Got Milk and Ford Motor Company. He has worked with several clothing lines to create his own lines, including Apple Bottoms. He also owned part of the Charlotte Bobcats until 2010. With $60 million in the bank, he’s one of the most successful rappers of his time, and he only continues to get better every time we turn around. Don’t expect him to become anything but wealthier.
