Shaq is a retired professional basketball player with a net worth around $350 million. He was born in the city of Newark, located in New Jersey just outside of New York City. His parents are not married, and his father left when he was just a baby to attend a stint in prison due to his drug addiction and issues. He was not around to see his son grow up, and he is not really part of his life to this day. He actually made the decision to hand over his parental rights to his mother’s new husband, Phillip A. Harrison, U.S. Army Sergeant. Shaq even released a rap album a little over 20 years ago when he was in his young 20s denouncing his father and calling his stepfather his real father. There is no relationship between the two, and that is a shame for the man who probably wishes he had maintained a relationship with his famous son – and a great thing for Shaq, who was given a real father.
He was a bored teen with his working parents and nothing to do after school, so he’d go to the Boys and Girls Club in Newark and play ball. He credits them with saving his life, saying that while many of the kids his own age were off finding other things to do, Shaq was playing ball and staying out of trouble. He didn’t begin playing ball until high school, when his family moved to Texas. He led his team to many championships and that’s when he was finally aware of the fact that he was really good and had a shot at going pro. He was only in high school when he was compared to the great Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and he even chose to wear number 33 in tribute (which he changed to 32 in college).
He decided to go to LSU to play ball since he’d met the coach when he and his father and mother lived in Europe where his father was stationed a few years before. He was a stellar player there, and he was named the SEC player of the year when he was at LSU. What is really remarkable is that even when he left LSU to enter the draft and play for the NBA, he still managed to continue his education and graduate college with a business degree. Shaq was the first draft pick in the 1992 NBA draft, chosen by the Orlando Magic. His career was brand new, he was one of the best players on the court and he was only just beginning.
Over the course of the next two decades he would win championships, awards, star in movies and release an album. He’s been one of the most prolific men in the business, and he currently hosts a sports show on television. He’s made the vast majority of his net worth playing ball for more than two decades, but he also has a lot of endorsements that pay him quite well, including endorsements with Pepsi, Reebock, and even Buick. Shaq will remain one of the most famous players in all of NBA history.
